I just had to share. Take a look at this picture; isn’t it amazing how the vine wraps around the trellis? I’d say it simply loves being around us, wrapping itself up tight, but I think it’s just a natural tendency. Either way, it’s a fun site to see on a walkabout.

As we saw the final bottles drop into cases in our latest round of bottling, we now look forward to sharing the latest fruits of our labor – and time - with you soon! Bottling is always an exciting adventure, and in a very real sense, it represents time in a bottle.

From their devotion to battling capricious late-spring freezes and tending vines in preparation for the sun-drenched days of summer, John Piña’s vineyard management team spent thousands of hours nurturing the vines.  Larry Levin’s meticulous and precise wine-making ensured that the unique qualities of the fruit were heightened, then blended to ensure the one-of-a-kind attributes you enjoy in every bottle of Lawer Family Wines.  This is the culmination of our hard work, special care and the year’s unique quirks of nature.

“If I could save time in a bottle

The first thing that I’d like to do

Is to save every day

Till Eternity passes away

Just to spend them with you.

If I could make days last forever

If words could make wishes come true

I’d save every day like a treasure and then

Again I would spend them with you.” – Jim Croce

This has been a year of change, both subtle and dramatic.  A year of transitions, both thoughtful and positive.  And a year to celebrate award-winning recognition and hard-earned success for Lawer Family Wines.  Our new labels are a tribute to the dedication, commitment, hard work and the time it has taken to reach these milestones.

We can’t offer these new wines to you just yet as they achieve maturation to overcome bottle shock for the next month or so. With all the agitation from barrel to bottle, each wine needs a little time to settle and coalesce before it’s ready for your wine glass. So stay tuned, we’ll be releasing these wines in August.

We’re thrilled to share this new vintage with you and, as always, hope to join your celebrations from backyard summer BBQs to special dinners with family and friends.  For us, wine-making is a toast to mutual success – ours and yours – and a celebration of time well spent…time in a bottle.

Cheers!

Happy 4th of July! You don’t have to see the news to know that it’s pretty much hot everywhere across the nation these days; you’re probably experiencing the news! There’s nothing like whiling away the afternoon sun with a crisp glass of Chardonnay sangria – ice cold, sweet and acidic, and downright delicious. It’s a cocktail for everyone.

White sangria can be made with any white wine, but we love the taste of our Chardonnay with this recipe. Add a little bit of this and that with fresh cut fruit, and you’ve got a drink to sip all summer.

Chardonnay Sangria Recipe:

- Equal parts of Chardonnay and white grape or peach juice; the frozen concentrate works well and should add enough sweetness as to not need sugar.

- Sliced grapefruit, lime, and/or lemon to taste.

- A little club soda if you want effervescence.

- Lots of ice!

Combine the Chardonnay, juice, and citrus together and let stand for a few hours to overnight. Though, all the ingredients mixed together taste good from the start, it really matters how much time you have. When you’re ready to serve, add a touch of club soda and ice.

Cool off, take a breather, and enjoy the afternoon!

Early summer is one of our favorite times to roam the vineyard. The sun shines a little brighter, and the vines reach up and out to bask in the light and warmth. As green leaves broaden and new branches embrace the trellising, the vineyard looks full, rich and ripe with potential.  It’s remarkably beautiful, and this is the perfect time to enjoy and reflect on one of the special rewards for the hard work that goes into making wine.

It’s on days like these we feel very blessed to be here in Knights Valley.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we had a group of women book our estate rental properties for a rendezvous in wine country filled with pampered fun, gourmet meals and spontaneous adventures. They started the weekend with massages at Indian Springs in Calistoga, toured the Napa Valley on bicycle, and toasted to good times with a glass of wine and dinner at Calistoga’s All Season Bistro. Doesn’t that sound fun?

Each of our estate rental properties is a fantastic destination for couples on a romantic getaway, and together they offer the perfect lineup for fun gatherings and reunions between family and friends.  The properties book quickly, so if you’re planning a trip to wine country, take a look at each of our three properties and contact us for availability.

Let us provide a secluded home base in the heart of wine country to enjoy your fun-filled escapades in Napa and Sonoma!

With Mother’s Day on the horizon, we’re planning a special dinner to celebrate the moms in our lives – with a twist on their signature dishes. True to her Nebraska upbringing, my mom’s mom made the best ooey gooey scalloped potatoes! My dad’s mom happened to make unbelievable beet borscht that honored her Russian roots.  As a tribute to them, our Mother’s Day dinner this year will be Dad’s seared halibut with scalloped potatoes and beets. The perfect pairing for this flavorful lineup is our award-winning Chardonnay, with its acidity and body to compliment the meal.

Seared Halibut Recipe:

- Vegetable oil

- Halibut, 1-inch thick individual serving size pieces without skin

- Salt and Pepper

- Fresh Tarragon

Turn the oven to 400F. Season both sides of the halibut with salt and pepper. Heat a sauté pan, preferably cast iron, on medium-high with the vegetable oil to coat the base. When the pan is hot, place the presentation side of the halibut on to the pan and let it sear undisturbed for 4 minutes. Flip the halibut over and place the pan in the oven for 4 minutes. Thereafter, remove the pan from the oven and serve the halibut over the scalloped potatoes and beets. Top with a delicate sprinkling of fresh tarragon and salt.

Scalloped Potatoes and Beets Recipe:

- Red skinned or Yukon potatoes, thinly sliced with skin on

- Beets, peeled and thinly sliced

- Whipping Cream

- Grated Parmesan

- Garlic, chopped finely

- Butter

- Salt and Pepper

Turn the oven to 350F. Grease a shallow glass-baking dish with butter. Layer the potatoes and beets, seasoned with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, garlic, a splash of cream and grated Parmesan between. Top with a little extra cream and Parmesan. Bake for about an hour, pressing to submerge the layers into the liquid after about 20 minutes and 40 minutes. Remove and place under foil for 15 minutes before serving.

And with a glass of Chardonnay in hand, we toast to you and yours on Mother’s Day!

What a weekend!  We had a great time at last month’s San Francisco Vintner’s Market pouring our 2009 Three Coins Syrah and our 2010 Hooker “Breakaway” Chardonnay. The event gave us an opportunity to meet a fun and lively group of discerning wine lovers, and reconnect with longtime Lawer Family Wine fans.  This is the perfect event to have fun and casually discover what pleases your palate.

Because we don’t have a wine tasting room just yet, we look forward to events like this to share our wine. And it’s always a kick (no pun intended) when rugby players share their own home pitch stories over a glass of Hooker. To this day, I’m still in awe that my dad and grandfather are alive after playing as Rugby Hookers themselves.

Stay tuned for our next event, and if you missed this year’s SF Vintner’s Market, be sure to mark your calendars now for next year’s event.

With Spring in full swing, it’s time to get the BBQ out and start grilling. And one of my favorite recipes for the BBQ is my Dad’s marinated lamb chops. My Dad has always been the cook in the house and I have to say that many of our meals at the dinner table growing up are still some of my favorites. And his marinated lamb chops are certainly one of them, especially on a sunny day in the back yard.

What goes into the marinade is so fresh and bright; it’s perfect for Spring. With all the fresh dill, you’ll want to wave your nose over the marinade just to take in the fragrance. And though we traditionally use lamb chops, other cuts of lamb will work with this recipe as well. Marinate for at least a couple of hours to overnight and grill them till medium-rare. They also go particularly well with our Three Coins Syrah.

Grilled Lamb Chop Marinade: (For about 6 lamb chops)

- ½ cup olive oil

- ¼ cup soy sauce

- 4 tablespoons of white vinegar

- 1 small chopped white onion

- 1 tablespoon of chopped garlic

- A couple shakes of Tabasco sauce

- A large handful of chopped fresh dill

- Freshly ground pepper
