Among his many achievements, my father was an old goldminer, who - with me and my four sisters in tow - worked a claim in the foothills of Alaska's Mt. McKinley. He would record the dates of three coins on a scrap of paper, put it in his wallet and toss the coins down the hill we planned to mine – it was his quality control check to ensure the very best results. If those three coins weren't at the bottom of the sluice box at clean up, that meant the water pressure had been too high and the coins had been washed into the tailing pile … along with some gold. Finding those three coins at the end of the season – in the bottom of the sluice box, and not in the tailing pile – was as rewarding for us as finding any gold nugget ever was.
Whether it's making fine wine, or mining for gold, the right terroir, or “sense of place,” is essential. Our vineyard in Knights Valley produces consistent gold medal wines, just like season after season our gold mine in Alaska produced gold nuggets – using Three Coins to ensure success. Those Three Coins symbolize the hard work, attention to detail and dedication it takes to any job right. Today, we honor those same values when making gold medal wines to celebrate the special moments in life when you “strike gold.”
